Freelancer: HD Edition

Freelancer: HD Edition is a mod that aims to improve every visual, aural, and gameplay aspect of the game Freelancer (2003) while keeping the look and feel as close to vanilla as possible. It also serves as an all-in-one package for players so they don't have to worry about installing countless patches and mods to create the perfect HD and bug-free install.

This mod was made possible thanks to the assistance of project Freelancer: Nomad Legacy. Huge thanks to the developers for allowing us to use their textures!
Freelancer: Nomad Legacy website
Freelancer: Nomad Legacy Mod DB page

N.B. Freelancer: HD Edition does not add additional content on top of Freelancer but rather enhances what the game already has to offer. Although minor gameplay changes were made, Freelancer: HD Edition will always be compatible with vanilla Freelancer. Therefore, players can use this mod to play on all vanilla servers as long as the server owners allow these changes.

Recommendations

For the best possible experience, it is recommended to force enable anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering for Freelancer through your GPU settings. To learn how to do this, please visit the link from your GPU manufacturer:

If you have selected the Windows 10 compatibility patch when installing this mod, you can learn how to enable native anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering here: How to enable native MSAA and Anisotropic Filtering with the Windows 10 compatibility patch

Due to the large file size of many textures used in this mod, some users may experience significantly longer load times during gameplay. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to install Freelancer: HD Edition on an (M.2) SSD.

Installation instructions

  1. Download FreelancerHDSetup.exe from Releases
  2. Open the setup file and read the instructions on-screen carefully

  • Create tool for fixing 1.0 save files

Create tool for fixing 1.0 save files

Players who started a vanilla playthrough on FL 1.0 and continue with the HD Edition are likely to run into an issue where they can't progress to the next level. This is caused by an internal mission number change in the official 1.1 patch, so this is something we can't change. https://the-starport.net/freelancer/forum/viewtopic.php?post_id=20878#forumpost20878

What we can do is create a tool that players can use to fix their save file. It should be a simple Windows forms application where a player can select their save file, and the program will output a fixed version with the click of a button. Using FlCodec for this is strongly recommended http://adoxa.altervista.org/freelancer/tools.html#flcodec. Would need to ask adoxa for permission.

  • Linux/Wine 'freelancerhd.zip does not exist or cannot be opened'

Linux/Wine 'freelancerhd.zip does not exist or cannot be opened'

I thought it would be cool to get FL with the HD edition Linux/Steam Deck-ready via Lutris, so I've been testing it out with the new Inno Setup installer. Unfortunately, I'm having a particular issue with it after it downloads the freelancerhd zip and attempts to extract it:

    2021-10-22_10-17

The zip file is there and I can open and extract it manually just fine.

I've extracted the setup file to look at the script to see what the behavior is, but I believe this wasn't included when the executable was compiled, because I only see these files:

    2021-10-22_08-28

Here are some install logs of various attempts.

    flhdinstall.log flhd.log flhdlog3.log

I've been messing around with various Wine builds and configurations to see if there was Linux things happening (probably). But I was hoping to be able to read the install script and recompile to see if something simple like a pause before unzip step resolves it.

Haven't experienced this issue with the installer in Windows on the same computer. Please feel free to close if this is outside of the project's scope.

  • Incorrect NPC chatter

    Incorrect NPC chatter

Sometimes NPCs can be heard saying "I'm going to Bounty Hunters Red 6", or "I'm preparing to Bounty Hunters Green 4" for example when they start attacking Bounty Hunter ships. It's clear that these lines are missing the word "engage". We should have a look at what we can do to fix this.

Briesen Mining Facility crash on server after undocking

A vanilla player has reported an issue regarding a crash which occurred after undocking from Briesen Mining Facility (BW03) on a JFLP server. Since this is a JFLP issue, it's an HDE issue too.

I had a quick go at trying to reproduce the issue. I was running a vanilla client on the same JFLP server, but I couldn't get it to crash, not even after 5 undocks. I've been provided a save file of the user in question which will hopefully give me better luck.

  • Compress all HQ music tracks

    Compress all HQ music tracks

Freelancer: HD Edition includes HQ music from the Bonus DVD. All the .wav files have a bit rate of 1411kbps, which is a lot. It's also apparent Freelancer doesn't handle such large music file sizes well since there have been many occurrences where a track doesn't load correctly, or the end keeps looping.

It's strongly recommended to compress the existing HQ music files to 320 kbps. Not only would that save a ton of space, but it would probably also fix most if not all of the known audio bugs, including #84. Besides, I doubt anyone would even be able to notice the difference during gameplay.

  • No clear indication that Freelancer: HD Edition has succesfully installed

No clear indication that Freelancer: HD Edition has succesfully installed

Many users can't confirm whether their Freelancer: HD Edition installation has succeeded. We could change the version number text at the bottom-right of the main menu to something like "HD Edition VER 1.0". The 1.0 should not be replaced as it's crucial that players are aware of the fact that they can play on vanilla servers with this mod.

  • Issues regarding flplusplus

    Issues regarding flplusplus

For most people, the flplusplus plugin doesn't cause any issues. However, on some very specific setups it does.

Invalid account name and passwords error

So far two people have seen the following message when they launch the game:

    image

This message prevents them from playing the game. The strange part is that this is a server-related error message which should never be shown when the game launches. Presumably, this is a permission issue. However, I can't confirm that.

    Crashes

Two other people experienced outright crashes when launching the game. One user was running Windows Server 2019 and the other claimed to play on an iMac M1 with Parallels 17.1.0 or 18. What's weird is that the reported crash offsets are in completely different DLLs. I've noted the following ones:

results from Event Viewer "Faulting application name: Freelancer.exe, version: 1.0.1223.11, time stamp: 0x3e401b79 Faulting module name: SoundManager.dll, version: 1.11.0.173, time stamp: 0x3e401cd4 Exception code: 0xc0000005"

    MP3codec.dll
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0xc00001189

    storyfactions.dll
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0xc0000108f

    VCRUNTIME140.dll
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0xc0000389f

The exception code 0xc0000005 seems to be an access violation. Though I have no idea why it would occur.

Both of the mentioned issues are fixed by simply removing the flplusplus.dll entry in dacom.ini. I myself have not been able to reproduce either of the issues, which makes troubleshooting and debugging them very difficult.

I should mention that I had to recompile flplusplus because of a few minor changes I made to the plugin. First, I removed the built-in WheelScroll plugin since HDE already uses a newer version. Additionally, I added an extra lod scale function in graphics.cpp so that this feature wouldn't conflict with HDE's maximized draw distances. Though I really doubt that any of these modifications are the cause of the reported issues. If desired, I can upload the modified source code.

  • Repeated crash after undocking from Battleship York on server

Repeated crash after undocking from Battleship York on server

I came across this repeated crash when I was testing some stuff on my own server. I undocked from Battleship York in Leeds and about 2 seconds later, the game crashes. When I tried joining my server again, I was in space, but my game crashed yet again. This crash cycle continued until I beamed myself to Planet Manhattan in New York manually.

    How to reproduce:

~~1. Enable the Windows 10 compatibility patch when installing this mod~~ 2. Join the Freelancer Anarchy server ~~3. Buy a Rhino~~ 4. Dock at Battleship York in Leeds 5. Undock

~~This crash also occurs without the use of any d3d8.dll or d3d9.dll. However, with d3d8to9 the crash no longer happens, so if you disabled the Windows 10 compat patch, you wouldn't have this issue. Also, this issue does not happen on Single Player, regardless of whether or not you use the Win 10 compat patch.~~

I spent about 2 hours debugging it, and this may sound surreal, but I found out that the crash is caused by 1 or more of the following files:

    • DATA/SHIPS/loadouts.ini
    • DATA/SHIPS/loadouts_special.ini
    • DATA/SHIPS/loadouts_utility.ini
    • DATA/SHIPS/rtc_shiparch.ini

  • Create custom installer

    Create custom installer

Currently, we use Freelancer Mod Manager to make the mod installable. Although this solution satisfies all of our needs, it requires users to have two fully uncompressed versions of the mod on their drives to install the mod. A custom installer would be a better option here, as it simply copies the user's Freelancer folder, unpacks all the files from a compressed archive to the new Freelancer folder, which will save space.

The only thing that stops us from creating a custom installer is the custom options that our mod has. Porting our FLMM options to custom installer options is much easier said than done.

  • No Engine Trails

  • Corrections to engines_equip.ini

    Corrections to engines_equip.ini

This issue is to address potential changes to both effects and audio assigned to the ship engines in game. It will be split between two different branches.

Effects In the game, there are 3 different "classes" of effect for the different types of player pilotable ships: Light Fighter (LF), Heavy Fighter (HF), Very Heavy Fighter (VHF), and Freighter (FR). This is usually referenced by the use of "smallengine01, smallengine02, smallengine03" on the different effects that make up each engine. By looking at vanilla entries for the house faction engines, smallengine01 = LF, smallengine02 = HF/VHF, and smallengine03 = FR. Using that as baseline, the changes being made are made to align the rest of the engines to vanilla standards.

Audio Similar to effects, some audio references do not align to the house faction engines being used as a baseline. Some examples are freighter sounds being applied to fighter engines or vice versa.

  • Implementing model/mesh fixes

    Implementing model/mesh fixes

In FL, there exists some misalignment when it comes to models/meshes. In the Freelancer Galactic Community, a member who goes by Eagle-Vulture | RedComrade has put in work to fix some of these:

docking_ring: image image bh_fighter: image station_large_a: image image

These are just a few but I did ask if their work could be used and they said yes: image

Anyways, I'll collect their works that have been posted on FLGC and add them to this issue for review. As for testing, these new files need to be checked on MP to make sure no issues arise between those with and without these updated files. More to come.

  • Integrate FLSubs

    Integrate FLSubs

Some players have requested subtitles to be added to the mod. While I personally don't think subtitles fit a game like Freelancer (maybe except for the cutscenes and cinematics), I still think it's nice to at least have the option so players can enable them if they wish.

There's a mod out there called FLSubs (GitHub) that adds English subtitles to the game. It comes with a license that allows other mods/projects to use it without any problems.

Though there are three issues (including two major ones) which should be addressed and reviewed before FLSubs can be properly integrated into Freelancer: HD Edition.

    Issue 1

First of all, the subtitles mod makes use of d3d8.dll. Therefore, our DirectX-related enhancements can't be used while the subtitles are enabled, meaning players can only use them if they select the vanilla graphics API in the installer. It might be possible to combine it with DxWrapper.

    Issue 2

The subtitles mod comes with a modified Freelancer.exe where the stack size has been increased to 2 MB. From my quick tests, this modification worked fine with HDE for the most part. Unfortunately it seems to cause a few conflicts with the Console plugin, where some commands can't be entered properly anymore. Consequently, the Console option may have to be disabled automatically if the subtitles are enabled.

    Issue 3

FLSubs makes use of hardcoded configs for every screen resolution. These configs store the font sizes, text positions for the subtitles, etc. The issue is that there are a ton of different screen resolutions that players use to play Freelancer: HD Edition. Since only a few default configs exist, the subtitles mod won't work properly out of the box for all the other resolutions. Creating configs manually by request doesn't seem viable either.

It might be possible to automatically create configs in the HDE installer based on the user's screen resolution (which can already be detected). This would allow us to dynamically set all the font sizes and positions in the config files. If this works properly, we can later do it in the launcher so we can support any resolution the user wants to play HDE in with subtitles.

  • Update mod description/summary

    Update mod description/summary

    Our current mod description/summary is:

Freelancer: HD Edition is a mod that aims to improve every aspect of the game Freelancer (2003) while keeping the
look and feel as close to vanilla as possible. It also serves as a customizable all-in-one package for players so they
don't have to worry about installing countless patches and mods to create the perfect HD and bug-free install.

In my opinion the last sentence doesn't accurately portray the purpose of the mod in its current state. I believe I wrote the last version of the summary around when v0.4/v0.4.1 got released. Back then the mod was really more about the textures, while the other stuff wasn't seen as very important by most people. However, with the releases of v0.5 and v0.6, I strongly believe that the mod has become so much more with all the bug fixes and additional gameplay features we've implemented. Additionally, I'm not a writer at all so I don't think I've worded the description very nicely either.

As a result of the last part of the description being outdated, many players believe Freelancer: HD Edition is a simple compilation of texture packs, and nothing more. While this may have been partially true in very early versions of the mod, in its current state the mod has become a lot more than just that. It'd be very unfortunate if all the other elements we've added would go mostly unnoticed.

What I do like in the current description is that it mentions it's customizable and all-in-one. However, I'm not sure about the word "package".

I'd like to mention the following in the description to ameliorate it (just some ideas):

    • Restoration of many original textures/art/assets.
    • Additional gameplay features.
    • General Freelancer bug fixes and overall quality of life updates to improve the gameplay experience, and to accurately represent a well-polished version of Freelancer.

  • Vanilla .thn script issues

    Vanilla .thn script issues

    1. In the Sprague cutscene during the bomb drop scene, one Rheinland ship doesn't have an engine trail while the other one does.
    2. In the Baxter cutscene, one of the 3 Rheinland ships doesn't have an engine trail, while the others do.
    3. During the Sprague cutscene when Trent and Juni just land, Trent can be seen moving his lips without saying anything. In the Beta version of FL, Trent actually said something here about the previously destroyed Rheinland ships. However, the audio has been removed while the moving lips haven't. The moving lips should be removed too.
    4. When Trent docks with Battleship Hood after beating Hovis, the music in the story script starts really loud and gets quieter later. It should be quiet from the start.
    5. In the Tekagi cutscene after Tekagi throws his knife at Ozu, he moves his lips without saying anything. The moving lips should be removed since this cutscene uses a so-called "Mix" audio, meaning the entire audio for the cutscene consists of 1 file. Therefore, it's very difficult to add additional voice lines to it.
    6. The final Toledo cutscene is lacking a smooth music transition.
    7. When the fighters attack Baxter there is a lot of Nomad explosion sounds and also laser sounds for the Tachyon weapons.
    8. During the Jacobi cutscene in Mission 11, the lighting looks really bad in some of the scenes.

There is however an issue with the Dethorn tool that essentially causes dethorned .thn scripts to be slightly different from the originals.
